It’s impossible to talk about my Aunt Lisa without mentioning all the joy she brought to this world. From the moment you stepped into her orbit, everything got a little shinier, a little sweeter, and of course a little more fabulous. Lisa could make a Tuesday afternoon feel like a grand holiday, and always made sure everyone around her felt a warm welcome. If you ever had the privilege of spending time with her around celebrations, special days, or sometimes just a random date on the calendar, you knew you were going to witness a shining star able to bring cheer to any gathering. Buckets of decorations, twinkling lights brightening an entire room, and enough wonderfully themed hand-crafted decor to rival a major motion-picture production.
Aunt Lisa was the kind of person who didn’t just send a card, she made one, likely glittered and layered, and chances are it was something entirely unique in itself. Lisa was a perfectionist, and not in some cold, rigid way. Everything she did had a purpose, and every unique detail she brought along with her was tied-in with love. Lisa somehow always looked like she had stepped out of a vintage chic fashion magazine, even while making sure everything behind-the-scenes was running smooth.
There was this sense of comfort just being in her presence, even when it felt like the world was unraveling, you knew you were safe. Lisa was obsessively organized, fiercely color-coordinated, a tech-savvy engineer-minded magician who used her uncanny eye for style and Photoshop skills to bring fun to any creative project. I once watched her transform a cluttered back patio into an enchanted gathering place using only thrifted or hand-crafted objects, an inexpensive strand of colorful lights, and of course her sparkling one-of-a-kind glass creations that always were able to catch your eye. Anything Lisa saw potential in, especially those creative projects she threw together from scratch, were always such a pleasure to experience.
Lisa loved to listen to eerie audiobooks about murder mysteries and futuristic sci-fi stories of the universe, but she gave warmth like it was her life's work. Lisa forgave deeply, laughed happily, danced like she meant it, and did her best to make every moment you shared with her a memorable one. Lisa always stood for what she believed was right and showed the rest of us how to be kind and generous without being naive, glamorous without being vain, and creative without limits. Her bravery was always remarkable, as she trusted people, even when the world said not to. Lisa believed in giving everyone a shot. When she walked into a room, it was like the lights finally came on, but only better, because they were probably arranged in a hand-crafted glass box or stylized in a way that she designed herself.
We were lucky. I was lucky. To be loved by my Aunt Lisa was to be celebrated. And though I’ll miss her radiant presence for the rest of my life, I’ll carry the lessons, the sparkle, the humor, and the homemade confections in my heart always. Goodnight, Aunt Lisa. The comfort you provided us all with was one of your greatest attributes. May you rest in peace and comfort.
