Delia Alvarez, 101, of Boston, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Born in Guatemala City, Guatemala, Delia dedicated her early life to teaching deaf and blind children throughout Central America, often traveling with nuns to reach those most in need. In the late 1960s, she immigrated to the United States with her mother, Isabel Alvarez, and her sister, Carmen Carrillo, along with Carmen’s husband, Jorge.
Delia spent many years working and volunteering in Boston’s Fenway neighborhood, and took great pride in her award-winning garden at the Fenway Victory Gardens. A devout Catholic, she served as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and in other ministries at both St. Anthony’s Shrine and St. Cecilia’s Church, and was a devoted volunteer at the Peterborough Community Center.
Known lovingly as "Tía, " Delia took immense pride in her nieces and nephews she helped to raise and guide throughout their lives.
She is predeceased by her brother, Manuel Guillen, and his wife, Elena. Delia leaves behind her beloved family: her sister and brother-in-law, Carmen and Jorge Carrillo of Roslindale; her nieces, Sandra Carrillo of Roslindale and Jennifer Carrillo and her partner, Tarik Manna, of Dorchester; and her nephews,
Manuel Alvarez of Las Vegas, NV, and Jorge Carrillo Jr. and his wife, Laura, of Marion, MA. She also leaves her cherished great-nieces and nephew: Isabella, Jorge III, and Olivia Carrillo.
