Richard Cook 97, a longtime Boston resident, died Sunday, March 26, 2023 at home, surrounded by family after a fierce two-year battle with prostate Cancer. He was the husband of the late June E. (Turrentine) Cook, who preceded him in 1994. Born in Springfield, July 29, 1925, a son of the late Thomas and Frances (Frost) Cook.
Mr. Cook was a U.S. Serviceman with the U.S. Navy during WWII, he served in many battles at Saipan, Peleliu, Philippines, New Guinea, and most notably Iwo Jima where he was the first (Special Marine) soldier to carry and raise the original flag at Iwo Jima. Mr. Cook settled in Boston’s South End with his family, owned a plumbing business, was a treasured leader within the community and shared his military story to advocate for Veterans. His most valuable treasure was family and spending precious moments with his grandchildren.
Mr. Cook was a caring, resilient and loyal husband, father, grandfather and friend. He leaves a tremendous legacy for future generations to aspire to.
Mr. Cook is survived by his daughters Heather Cook and Pamela Cook, Son Derrick St.Hill, grandchildren; Cameron Cook, Jasmine St.Hill and Madison Cook.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Monday, April 3rd from 6-8pm. His family will gather again at the funeral home for a funeral service on Tuesday, April 4th from 9:30 am to 11 am. Richard's interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, following his service in the funeral home.
