George A. Baker of Canton passed away January 11th peacefully at home. Beloved husband of the late Marie C. (Mersch), Father of Gretchen Tarleton and her late husband Jeffrey of MD, George Baker and wife Gina of the Philippines, Susan Baker of Canton, Gregory Baker and wife Dianne of N.J., and Christopher Baker and wife Leeanne of Franklin. Grandfather of Emily and husband Scott, Olivia and husband David, Jeffrey, Griffin, Jack, McKenzie and Flynn, and great grandfather of Ginny.
Born in South Boston and raised in Milton, he graduated from St. Sebastian’s High School. He attended The Catholic University in Washington D.C. where he graduated with his Mechanical Engineering Degree. He worked at Natick Laboratory Army Development and Engineering Center in Natick. He was a proud Navy Veteran of WW II. He lived in Canton for 34 years. Upon retirement, moved to Sandwich on Cape Cod with his wife, often referring to this time as their “golden years.” George was President of the Sandwich Arts and Crafts, volunteered at the Sandwich Senior Center and Sandwich Public Library where he taught computer classes. He was a watercolor artist with a heavy emphasis on Lighthouses in New England. He made Nantucket baskets and pocketbooks. He loved boating and restored a 40 ft. Mathews cabin cruiser christened the Mariezo, after his wife, that he and his family vacationed on for many years on Cape Cod and the surrounding islands. He was an avid golfer and played in his younger years at the Charles River Country Club with his brothers, Robert, Herby, and Jack. The Funeral Mass will be at St. Oscar Romero Church in Canton, Monday, January 16th at 10:30am. Visiting hour prior to Mass from 9:00 to 10:00 am at Dockray and Thomas Funeral Home in Canton. Burial Canton Corner Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to St. Oscar Romero Church 700 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021. | |||||
