James “Ned, Jimmy” Maunsell, of Medford, formerly of Tullig Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland, passed away on Saturday, November 12th, surrounded by his loving family. He was 83. Born and raised in Tullig Castlegregory, County Kerry, Ireland, he was the cherished son of the late Thomas and Hannah (Hurley) Maunsell.

As a young man Jimmy came to the United States, and stayed with his family in Belmont, before settling in Medford in 1962. He then joined the United States Army, and served as a reservist. Jimmy had a strong work ethic and was able to open his own construction and painting company Maunsell and Son’s, in 1965.

Jimmy was an avid Irish football and hurling player. He played for many years with the Kerry league and the Galway league in New York. His jersey numbers were 8 and 3. He was an active member of the Gaelic Athletic Association and president of the Irish Northern Aid, in Boston, before cofounding and presiding as president of the Friends of Irish Freedom. Jimmy, with the help of his wife Tina, helped many Irish immigrants settle in the United States. Their home was a refuge for all; no one was ever turned away. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, uncle, brother and friend. He will be missed by all.

James was the beloved husband of the late Catherine “Tina” (McGillicuddy) Maunsell. He was the devoted father of Maura O’Donoghue and her husband Jerimiah of Medford, Shamus Maunsell and his wife Jennifer of Medford, Shiobhan Clifford and her husband Richard of Methuen, Sean Maunsell of Medford, and Kelly Tello and her husband Tony of Medford. He was the loving grandfather of Kristina, Shamus, Michaela, Hannah, Rebecca, Amanda, Captain, Cameron, Owen, Gavin, AJ, Gabriella and Salvi. He was the dear brother of Thomas Maunsell of Winchester, Pat Maunsell of Medford, Bridie Sheehy, County Kerry, Ireland, Joe Maunsell of Medford, Rita Leahy of County Kerry, Ireland, Bruno Maunsell of Methuen, John Maunsell of Medford, Kevin Maunsell and Mary Kennedy both of County Kerry, Ireland.

James funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, on Thursday, November 17th at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Raphael Church, 512 High St., Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend and may visit with the family at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM. Services will conclude with burial at Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Memorial donations to be utilized for the benefit of Jimmy’s son Shamus may be given to Kelly Tello who has been designated to receive such donations.
