Obituary

GIROUX, Eugene Xavier of Wellesley, formerly of Weston and West Dennis, died following a long illness, on June 6, 2022. Predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan (Gagan). Devoted father of Susan Dee and her husband Tim of Wellesley, E. Mark Giroux and his wife Susan of Andover, and Jackie Brooks and her husband Jim of Wellesley. Loving grandfather of Tim Dee, Jr, (Emma), Matthew Dee (Nina Ruth), Chris and Nicole Giroux, Carly Dee, Brendan and Madeline Brooks and great-grandfather of Henrik Dee and Timothy J. Dee, III. Also survived by his brother, Kevin Giroux (Anne Marie), of Woburn and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Born in Boston on May 8,1928 to Eugene Hercules and Mary Elizabeth (Cotter) Giroux. The oldest of three sons, Gene grew up in Somerville and Arlington and spent cherished summers in Marshfield. He proudly graduated from Boston College High School, Boston College and Boston College Law School, making him one of few “Triple Eagles”. The Jesuit teachings and traditions shaped his life and he remained intensely devoted to his faith until his last breath.

After graduating from BC High, Gene enlisted and served for 2 years in the US Army, stationed in Korea. Upon completing his education, Gene practiced law in private litigation practice in Boston for 52 years, with the exception of serving a four year appointment as Assistant United States Attorney during the Kennedy Administration. A natural born litigator, he thrived on the strategizing and intellectual challenge of the courtroom and succeeded in complex negotiations. Gene was, however, happiest on his boat, navigating the waters of Bass River and Nantucket Sound, often surrounded by his family. He adored foreign travel and remembered each and every detail of the many trips he had taken with his wife Joan. Above all,he cherished time spent with his grandchildren, never forgot a birthday, anniversary or holiday and was obsessed with gift giving.

His self-discipline, energy and devotion to faith, family and intellect were unrivaled. Gene was one of a kind and all of us who knew and loved him can attest to the fact that he “did it his (my) way”. We will all miss him terribly and remember him always.

Gene’s family would like to extend tremendous gratitude to the amazing caregivers that cared for him during the past year.

Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, in Wellesley, will be private. A Memorial Mass celebrating Gene’s life will be held at 10:00 am, on Monday, June 13th at St. Paul’s Church, Wellesley. Relatives and friends kindly invited. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in his memory may be made to Franciscan Childrens’ Hospital, 30 Warren Street, Brighton, MA 02135.
