ALICE ROYDEN FORBES

12/27/30 – 6/2/22

Alice Royden Forbes died on June 2, 2022, in Ventura, California, at the age of 91. The daughter of Captain Herbert Nathan Royden, Jr., USN, and Myrtle Fornander Royden, she was born in Los Angeles on December 27, 1930. A graduate of Stanford University, she was married in 1956 and raised three daughters. She had a career in accounting, working at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Stanford University before setting up as an independent tax preparer. Upon her retirement, she moved to Laguna Woods in Orange County and in 2021, to Ventura.

Alice’s many interests contributed to her very full and active life. She sang for many years in the Winifred Baker Civic Chorale and the San Francisco Symphony Chorus. Later in life she learned to play the French horn, joining several local orchestras. She was an avid tennis player, playing in USTA Senior championships into her 70s, and also enjoyed golf and duplicate bridge. Her greatest love was of the mountains, especially the High Sierras. Her love of travel took her around the world from the Galapagos Islands and Peru to Europe and Nepal, where she climbed Annapurna.

She is survived by her daughters, Mary Forbes Nicoll, Margaret Forbes MacDonald and Elizabeth Forbes Whitaker, and their husbands; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Her brothers, Herbert N. Royden, III, and George Russell Royden predeceased her. A memorial service will be held at Boyko and Reardon Mortuary on Teloma Drive in Ventura on Thursday, June 23, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be sent to Habitat for Humanity, Sempervirens, or a charity of one’s choice.
