Obituary

MCMANUS, Barbara M. Age 59 of Dedham, passed peacefully in the care and comfort of her family on Wednesday, May 18, 2022. Barbara was the beloved daughter of the late Thomas J. Jr. and Marie R. McManus whose devotion, care and love allowed Barbara to have a full and happy life. The cherished sister of Thomas McManus (predeceased), Michael McManus (Debi) of Dedham, Peter McManus (Marilyn) of Dedham, Gerard McManus (Marianne Walter) of Norwood, and Elizabeth Howard (John) of Dedham. Dear aunt of Kelly Souza (Michael), Krissy McManus, Kim Bourque (Christopher), Melissa Flemming (Brendan), Sarah McManus, Gerard McManus, Caroline McManus, Patrice Roundy (Peter), Catherine Heider (Benjamin), and Bernadette Sullivan (Brennan). Loving great aunt of Ella and Ava Souza, Kingston and Harlow Bourque, Logan and Ashleigh Flemming, and Alden Heider. Barbara was always surrounded by her many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends whose love and encouragement gave her a strong sense of family and belonging. She loved and appreciated her compassionate and loving care givers who became her close friends.

A lifelong Dedham resident, Barbara attended the Avery School before graduating from Dedham High School. In being part of the first integrated Special Needs program at both schools in the 1970’s, Barbara helped pave the way for future students. She then went on to start her career working at The Charles River Center in Needham, where she received an employment opportunity at the Colgate Corporation. She eventually found her way back to the Charles River Center where she retired at the age of 55. Barbara enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She loved going to shows, dancing at parties, watching TV and coming up with names for her collection of stuffed animals. Barbara was also part of an NIH/MGH study to search for biomarkers of Alzheimer’s in people with Down Syndrome, with the hope that her participation in the study would provide data to assist in the development of treatment for future generations. Barbara’s amazing attitude and love of life was shared with all who crossed her path. Her contagious smile and quick wit had an impact that will be her legacy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, May 25th, at 10 AM at Saint Mary’s Church, 420 High Street Dedham, MA 02026. Relatives and friends are welcome to attend. The family is requesting that all attending please wear masks and distance in the Church to protect compromised individuals who may be in attendance. Interment will be private at Brookdale Cemetery, Dedham.

Her family is grateful for the many years of support and development provided by the many teams at The Charles River Center and the Department of Developmental Services.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in the name of Barbara McManus are gratefully accepted by: The Charles River Center 59 E. Militia Heights Drive Needham, MA 02492 Attn: Development Department.
