Lisa M. Buckley of Marblehead, a therapist at Boston Evening Therapy Associates, died unexpectedly at home on Friday, January 14. She was 60.
Born in Hackensack, N.J., on March17, 1961, Lisa was raised and educated in Scotch Plains, N.J. She graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, where she wrote for the school paper, sparking a life-long interest in journalism.
Lisa received her Bachelorof Science degree in Journalism from Boston University in 1984. Her journalism career spanned over twenty years, culminating in her 10-year tenure as City Editor for the Boston Herald.
Before joining the Herald, she worked as the Sunday editor of The Eagle-Tribune. Under Lisa’s direction, The Eagle-Tribune was annually named Sunday newspaper of the year by the New England Newspaper Association. She also worked at North Shore Weeklies, the Middlesex News and the Tab.
After leaving the Herald, Lisa worked as a freelancer to enable her to care for her ailing parents on Cape Cod. Following the death of her father, Lisa moved her mother to an apartment in Salem so that her mother would not have to be placed in an assisted living facility. Always concerned with the well-being of others, Lisa then made the decision to change career paths by pursuing a Master’s Degree in Counseling at Salem State University.
After becoming licensed as a Mental Health Counselor in 2015, she worked as a clinician at Beth Israel Lahey Healthy Services. During the last three years of her life., Lisa was employed as a therapist at Boston Evening Therapy. Her greatest joy was helping her patients improve their lives.
An accomplished cook, Lisa enjoyed preparing gourmet meals for her family. A huge fan of NPR, she had an insatiable appetite for reading fiction and following the news.
Lisa is survived by her sister Laura of West Nyack, N.Y.; her sister-in-Law Maria Buckley of Salem; and her two nieces, Meredith of Salem & Gabrielle of West Nyack, N.Y.; and her aunt Mary Ann of Allentown, PA.
She was predeceased by her parents, Earl and Agnes Buckley, and her brother, Michael.
She will be dearly missed by her patients, colleagues, family and friends. Her sister Laura said that she lost not only her sister, but her best friend. Her compassion and generosity will always be remembered.
