Obituary

GOMATOS, Mary (Condakes) 96, longtime resident of Belmont, died peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family and wonderful caregivers. She was the beloved wife of the late Theophilus Gomatos, the adored mother of Carolyn DelGizzi and her husband David, cherished grandmother to Jonathan, Theo, Matthew and Maria, devoted sister of Alexandra Alphas and her husband Stephen, and the late John, George, Leo, James Condakes and Pauline Tompouras. She is also survived by her loving sister-in-law Bessie Condakes as well as many treasured nieces, nephews and friends.

Born on August 10, 1925, in East Boston, the fifth of seven children she attended Girls Latin High School and then Lesley University where she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in early childhood education. She was employed by the City of Chelsea for her entire career which spanned from classroom teacher to principal to reading specialist. She was able to connect in a special way with her students and establish an influence that transcended the classroom and many of her students kept in contact long after graduation. The consummate educator, Mary continued her love of teaching long after retirement and would tutor her grandchildren and grand nieces and nephews whom she adored and showered with everlasting love. To see them succeed brought her so much joy. She was always researching new ways to best educate those around her and to open the world and all its possibilities to all she encountered.

She was a longtime member of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of New England and St Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Weston where she was very active serving as President of the Philoptochos as well as a Sunday School teacher for many years. She was also a member of the Hellenic Women’s Club working tirelessly to raise money for their wonderful charities.

She will be deeply and lovingly missed by all that knew and loved her.
