NATICK: Phyllis J. (Engle) Sonnenschein, 83, died peacefully and comfortably at her home in Natick on November 5, 2021.

She was born in Troy, New York on July 25, 1938 the daughter of the late I. Samuel
Engle and Rose (Savage) Engle.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter Karen S. Feeney and her husband Edward Feeney of Auburn. “Mum” was a wonderful grandmother to Karen and Ed’s daughters, Erika S. Feeney and Rebecca S. Feeney who will miss her dearly.

Phyllis was a 54 year resident of Natick. She loved her Nimitz Circle and MacArthur Road neighborhood where she was well known for her quick smile, warm greetings, and treats for the local dogs. She celebrated her favorite season of Fall by hosting an annual neighborhood party every October. As a passionate cat owner, Phyllis doted on her cat Coco who was a tremendous support to her and who quickly became a star of the neighborhood.

Phyllis was a graduate of Troy High School and received her BS in Education from Albany State Teachers’ College and her Master’s Degree in Education from Boston University. She was a teacher with the Burlington School System for 24 years, nurturing and mentoring students from 1975 to 1999 as a Biology and Chemistry teacher. She also tutored at Wilson Middle School in Natick for many years. Phyllis had a true passion to teach and learn the latest breakthroughs in science instruction.

Phyllis volunteered her time at Newton-Wellesley Hospital and was an active member of the Golden Tones Chorus for over twenty years. It was a great joy of her life to spread her love of music and the happiness it brings to hospitals, nursing homes and parks. The wonderful people she met at the Golden Tones Chorus became some of her dearest friends.

At her request, there will be no visiting hours or funeral services. Her family will host a Celebration of Life in the spring.

In lieu of flowers, her family suggests that memorial gifts in Phyllis’ memory be sent to the Golden Tones Chorus, 7 Erie Drive, Natick, MA 01760 or www.goldentones.org.
