Obituary

Quinebaug, CT.
Edward M. Mead, Jr. passed away peacefully November 2, 2021, at his home surrounded by his children. He was 73 years old.
Born in Worcester, MA., Ed Jr. was the son of Edward “Big Ed” and Helen Mary (Thorpe) Mead. He was a lifelong resident of Quinebaug, CT.
and graduated from Tourtellotte Memorial High School in 1965. During his early years, according to his grade-school report cards, he was “restless”
and “inclined to mischief”, and these traits did not fade with time. He attended Nichols College before entering the United States Marine Corps in 1966.
ED jr. served in the Vietnam War from 1967to 1968 with the HMH-463 heavy helicopter squadron as a CH-53-A crew chief. He flew 242 successful combat missions during the Tet Offensive and the Battle of Khe Sanh , conducting rescue and supply operations. He left the Marine Corps as a Corporal in 1969, but like
many Marines, the Corps did not leave him. Throughout his life, he remained Semper Fidelis and was particularly proud of his service and the service of others to their country and the Corps.
For more than 30 years, Ed Jr. was a welder with the Iron Workers Local 57 of Worcester. Throughout his life, he also worked as a boiler =maker, a commercial driver, a mechanic, a Barnstable, MA. police officer, a CT, Dept. of Motor Vehicles inspector, and ran his own welding business. He had a tool for any job, and if Eddie couldn’t fix it, it wasn’t fixable.
Ed loved to fish, and fortunately, that wasn’t contingent on catching anything. He would regularly spend his summers with his family, camping and surfcasting for striped bass in Charlestown and Point Judith, R.I. He loved seafood, particularly lobster. He enjoyed the Patriots, Red Sox, and NASCAR, and he loved his guns, his Marlboros, and his black Russians.
He leaves his “number one”son Edward Mead III of Thompson and his wife Devon, their three children Olivia, Colin and Waylon Mead; his favorite son Scott Patrick Mead of Woodstock, and his wife Nikki, and their two children Molly and Dylan Mead; and his daughter Kelly Elise Mead of Thompson.
He also leaves is brother Donald Mead of Quinebaug, and his sister Carol of Thompson, and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Frank Patrick Mead.
