CHICOPEE – Mary Ellen Garvey, 77, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, June 30, 2021. She passed into Eternal Life from her home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on December 8, 1943, a beloved daughter of the late Michael J. and Catherine T. (Kearney) Garvey. She was raised in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, attended Our Lady of Hope Elementary School Class of 1958 and graduated in 1962 from Cathedral High School. She was raised and lived for many years at Van Horn Place in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield and moved to Chicopee in 2000 where she lived the remainder of her life. After graduating from high school, she was hired by the New England Telephone and Telegraph Company where she worked her entire life and retired in 1994 from the Accounting Department. Mary Ellen was a life member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Proud of her Irish heritage, she was a longtime member of the John Boyle O’Reilly Club where she was a member of their Honor Guard. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved brother, John P. “Jack” Garvey who was Called Home on April 21, 2020. She leaves her loving sister and brother, Catherine G. Pickul and her husband, Henry, and Michael J. Garvey and his wife, Patricia, all of Chicopee; her loving sister-in-law, Margaret R. “Peggy” Garvey of Chicopee; her two dear nephews, Sean M. Garvey and his wife, Sheila, of West Springfield and Carl M. Pickul and his wife, Kristin, of Hudson, FL; her three dear nieces, Angela M. Pickul and her fiancé, Angelo Denehy, of Chicopee, Tara Garvey Wilson and her husband, Jamie Wilson, of Holyoke, and Erin Garvey of Chicopee; her seven cherished grandnephews and grandnieces, Daniel Garvey, Michael Garvey, Joseph McClain, Jacqueline Pickul, Jeremy Pickul, Colm Wilson, and Ceara Daigle; and her many dear cousins, extended family members and friends. Her family would like to extend their deepest appreciation to Mary Ellen's goddaughter, Kathie Tarpey of Otis and her dear friend, Bernie O'Shea of Chicopee, for their care and support. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, July 7, 2021 at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. There are no visiting hours at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107.
