Obituary

Ekaterini "Katie" Georgakopoulos of Weston, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2021 at Wingate Healthcare in Chestnut Hill, MA following a long illness. She was 94.

She was born in Peiraias, Greece, on June 15, 1926, the only child of Thomas Anagnostopoulos, a merchant, and Evdokia, a homemaker. Her family had been forced out of Constantinople a few years earlier and had settled in the town of Kilkis in northern Greece, where Katie spent the early years of her life. She lost her mother when she was four years old and her father during WW II when the port of Peiraias was bombed. She had to assume a leadership role in the family business while still in high school during the difficult years of the Civil War in Greece.

Katie met her future husband, Elias Georgakopoulos, the military commander of the Kilkis prefecture, in 1960. They married in 1963 and moved to Athens. They had two sons, Dimitri, born in Thessaloniki and Tasso, born in Athens. Katie’s family became the center of her life and her devotion to her children was admired by all who knew her. After Elias passed away in 1972 Katie’s life became one of survival and determination to help her children fulfill their dreams. Upon graduating from the University of Athens both sons moved to the United States to pursue their careers. Following a period of annual trips between two continents, Katie left Greece and emigrated to the United States to be close to her children and her beloved grandchildren. She spent 15 years in Weston, Massachusetts, enjoying the company of those who loved her and giving her grandchildren the priceless gift of growing up with yiayia in their lives. Katie was witty and personable, an avid reader, an extremely competent crossword puzzle solver, but above all she was a Mother and Grandmother.

She is survived by her son Dimitri Georgakopoulos, her daughter in law May and her grandchildren Katerina and Alexander Georgakopoulos of Weston, MA and her son Dr. Tassos Georgakopoulos of New York, NY.
