Obituary

Grace L. “Lou” Martin

Answer: A natural fear of Friday the 13th.
Question: What is Paraskevidekatriaphobia?

Grace L. “Lou” Martin passed away on April 20, 2021. She was born on Friday, January 13, 1939, a superstitious day for most, but almost always lucky for her. She proudly called Camarillo her home for 45 years.
Lou earned her teaching credentials from the University of Southern California. She was an often-requested substitute teacher in Malibu during the 60s and 70s, Special Education classes being her favorite. An owner of Jere’s Liquor store during the 80s and early 90s, she often taught kids to count their change and one particular little patron how to handwrite. Lou taught her grandchildren their ABCs and shared funny little anecdotal sayings, as well as telling them many silly jokes.
Ever the avid speller, Lou loved to do word puzzles, the crosswords being her favorite. Every morning she would sit by her front window, blinds open to the neighborhood she so loved, doing the puzzles in the paper while drinking her morning coffee. Lou loved to see how many words she could make out of a longer word or taking names and spelling them backwards, for a quick giggle. Her favorite TV show was Jeopardy! and she got to see the show taped live in 2019!
Camping trips took Lou and her family throughout California, the Pacific Northwest and Canada. She and her husband, Don, enjoyed traveling throughout the United States during their retirement years.
Predeceased by Don, her husband of 54 years, Lou is survived by her daughters Bonnie Borough (Raymond) and Laurie Bowen (Scott); grandchildren James, Michelle, and Kristen Borough, Kathleen Bowen and Kacey Caspers (Benjamin); great grandchildren Aubree Bowen, Zachary, Haylee and Lucy Caspers.
Lou’s family would like to thank Ellen, Teresa, and Tina for their compassionate care and support.
Lou loved all animals, especially dogs, cats, and her ten tortoises. If you would like to make a donation in her name, please do so to Paw Works Inc., 79 Daily Dr. Suite 515, Camarillo CA 93010.
“Love you always, Mom. See you later, Alligator!”
