Obituary

Fontaine J. Metta, age 91 of Brockton, died April 26, 2021 at St. Joseph Manor after a period of failing health. She was born and raised in Brockton, the 13th and youngest child of the late Nicholas and Maria Metta.

Fontaine was a 1949 graduate of Brockton High School. In 1966, while working days at the telephone company and attending night classes, she earned her degree in education from Bridgewater State College. She had been an elementary school teacher West Bridgewater for many years and in her retirement continued to work as a substitute teacher.

A deeply religious woman, Fontaine made praying and singing in the choir a priority in her life. She had been a longtime member of St. Margaret and Our Lady of Lourdes churches where she taught CCD classes for a total of 62 years. She was also a Eucharistic minister at the churches and a member of their choirs, the Catholic Daughters, Legion of Mary and, since 1951, the 3rd Order of Mary.

Fontaine also loved to travel and had been to France, Italy, Canada and many other countries.

She leaves her sister Josephine Jackson of Brockton and was predeceased by her siblings: Michael, William, Sabino, Frank who died in WWII in the Battle of the Bulge, and his twin who died at birth, Salvadore and Antoinette Metta and Marie Shumway, Jennie Metta, Helen Cappiello and Lucy Cerro. She was also the aunt of three generations of nieces and nephews.

The family would like to offer their gratitude to the staff at St. Joseph’s Manor for their wonderful care to Fontaine during the past five years.
