STILES, Anne L. (Hilton) of Weston, MA, and Southport Island, ME, died on February 28, 2021 at the age of 93.
Beloved wife of the late Stephen D. Stiles and devoted mother to J. Stephanie Stiles of Wellesley, MA, Susan Stiles Dowell of Monkton, MD, Douglass R. Stiles of Framingham, MA, Geoffrey R. Stiles of Porter, ME, and Allan W. Stiles of Lake Mary, FL. Grandmother of Tylden, Susannah, Elizabeth, Neely, Andrew, Hannah, Julia, Seth, Ethan, William, and Lauren. Sister to the late Mary Hemeon and Pat Blaney.
Anne was a noted watercolor portraitist educated at the New England School of Art and a Copley Society Master of Boston who won numerous juried competitions and prizes, notably from the American Watercolor Society. She thrilled her family with portraits of them and the landscape they treasured beside the sea in Maine. Travels with her husband, particularly to Italy, informed her aesthetic and developed her passion for art.
She leaves behind a family she nurtured even more than her art. Her love for her family and commitment to their health, wellbeing and futures will live on in their hearts. When asked by a child how she could stand the work of cooking and cleaning for a family of seven, she replied, “You just have to be in love.” She had an uncanny common sense and astuteness. She could make one’s problems melt away with her logical thinking. Anne joins her beloved husband of sixty years. “I missed our conversations,” she often said after his death in 2008. “He was my best companion.”
Family will gather for her graveside interment on March 6 at 11 a.m. at Linwood Cemetery in Weston, MA.
