Obituary

York, John Amos of Needham passed peacefully surrounded by family at home, February 28, 2021 at age 77. Born in Watertown to the late Dr. Robert S. and Mary (Conlon) York. Beloved husband to Mary (Leahy) York with whom he celebrated 51 years of marriage. The 7th of 10 children, he is predeceased by his sisters Ann (York) McNamara, Sara (York) Tracy, Pauline (York) Hennessy, Mary Ellen (York) Rogers and brother Peter S. York. He is survived by his siblings Eileen (York) Hogan of Winchester; Robert M. of Everett, Jeremiah F. and William F., both of Watertown. Devoted father of Michael R. York (Tiffany) of Milton, Janet Kastrud (Mark) of Marshfield and Sheila Blum (Jared) of Hanover. Survived by seven beloved grandchildren, Gus, Charles and Maija Kastrud, John Finnian and Tatum York, and Ronan and Hazel Blum. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews and their spouses.

John attended Boston College High School and later the College of the Holy Cross prior to obtaining his Master of Social Work from Boston College. He spent his entire career of over 35 years ensuring quality child welfare services to the families and children of the Commonwealth and retired as a Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Social Services. He was active in Needham Soccer and an avid supporter of the Boston College hockey team.

Relatives and friends may share their condolences with the family on Wednesday, March 3rd, from 9 to 11am at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 1305 Highland Ave, Needham, MA. Interment will be private following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Lank Cancer Care, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital Needham.
