Stanley Vincent Chiozzi
1/6/2021

Stanley Vincent Chiozzi drifted peacefully into permanent sleep at home on January 6, 2021. Born in Somerville in 1919 amid that influenza pandemic, Stanley Chiozzi was a life-long Medford resident. A graduate of Medford High School, Class of l938, he went on to New England School of Art and Design. He was soon employed by J. August in Harvard Square, where he worked as a designer of men’s suits. Stan was a lover of music and musical theater, and from early on could be heard strumming his banjo and mandolin. For a time, he dabbled in the music/entertainment industry, managing one of Boston’s largest entertainment venues and working with well-known talent. An accomplished caricature artist, he once weighed the prospect of a job offer with the Walt Disney Company. California just did not have the appeal of Medford! He had a quick wit and immense knowledge-- ask him something he could not answer or a math problem he could not solve! An Army veteran during World War II, he was proud to have his name appear on the Medford Veteran’s Memorial. He was humored to be acknowledged on his 100th birthday by the Today Show’s Smuckers' Milestones segment, and grateful to be recognized with a resolution of the Medford City Council, on his 101 birthday in September. Stan was largely an entrepreneur, spending much of his professional life owning small and some larger businesses – never one to stay in a place that ceased to provide a challenge. A proponent of Dale Carnegie courses, he went on to become an instructor, teaching leadership, self-improvement, salesmanship, corporate training, and public speaking. Early on, he was employed by New England Gas and Electric and the John Hancock Insurance Co. Stan was a civic minded individual who was a fixture at the polls for many years on election day. In the early 70’s, he and his wife, Dorothy, along with a few others, were instrumental in forming the Medford Senior Football Associates, an organization devoted to supporting the Medford Mustangs with award banquets, football jackets, and funds for general use. He also served as a member of the Medford Bicentennial Commission.

Stan was predeceased by his loving wife and sidekick of 61 years, Dorothy Vargas Chiozzi of Cambridge. He leaves his adoring children of whom he was so proud -- daughter Donna Chiozzi of Medford, son Robert Chiozzi, and his wife, Margaret Fahey, of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, and son Thomas Chiozzi, and his partner, Sarrah Samraoui, of Tewksbury, and was the proud grandpa of Brian Chiozzi of Morristown, New Jersey with whom he shared a great love of the Boston Red Sox. Stan was the eldest son of the late Emilio and Agnes (Pignone) Chiozzi. His siblings include his devoted younger brother, Richard, and his wife, Margo Heath-Chiozzi, of Guilford Connecticut, and nephews Christopher Chiozzi and Anthony Chiozzi of New Haven, Connecticut. He was predeceased by brothers Albert Chiozzi and Vincent Chiozzi, and leaves several nieces and nephews, including most especially those with whom he had a particularly close connection -- Lillian Romaine Arnold, John Vargas, Vincent Chiozzi, Albert Chiozzi, and Corrine Poe. He also leaves many loving and loyal relatives, friends and neighbors from the Medford area and Bristol, Rhode Island, his happy place.

Due to our concern of the spread of COVID-19, visiting will be private. Family and friends are, however, welcome to join the funeral procession on Monday, January 18, at 12:00 noon, from Dello Russo’s Funeral Home, 306 Main Street, Medford, to his burial on Teehan Lawn at Oak Grove Cemetery, 230 Playstead Road, Medford. Adhering to strict safety protocols, you may remain in your vehicle or keep significant masked (required) distance during the graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Stan’s memory to the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Checks can be mailed to Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Development Office, 1575 Cambridge Street, Cambridge MA 02138, with note “in memory of Stan Chiozzi.”

A fitting Celebration of Stan’s full and amazing life will be held at a later date when it is once again safe to gather.
