Paul Robert Plante
10/26/2020

Paul R. Plante, 73, of Salem, Mass., entered into eternal life on October 26, 2020, in the presence of his friend and caregiver Christopher Doyle during a brief stay at Massachusetts General Hospital after being diagnosed with acute leukemia.
His parents Andre and Jeanne (Julien) Plante welcomed him, their first child, at Beverly Hospital on August 2, 1947. He spent most of his life in his loving family home at 14 Hersey Street in Salem. Paul was educated by the Sisters of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Saint Joseph School in Salem and graduated from Salem High School in 1966. After earning his teaching certificate from Salem State College in 1970, he obtained his first teaching position at the same school where he began his education—Saint Joseph School. He additionally served as Director of Religious Education at Saint Joseph Parish from 1974-1992. Paul gave his life and love to the education of his students and their families of Saint Joseph School for 36 years as their teacher and, eventually, principal. His fondest memories were of his students’ expressions of creativity and joy. He loved to teach French to young children and, especially, to help them to get to know Jesus.
Paul received a master’s degree in Theology and Education from Boston College in 1985 and a master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling from Emmanuel College in 1987. He served as an associate professor of Elementary Education at Salem State College from 1987-2009 and attained a doctoral degree in Education Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Florida in 1999.
Additionally, Paul taught in the Lynn Public schools, Saint John the Evangelist School in Beverly, and Saint John the Baptist School in Peabody.
He was a faithful Associate of the Sisters of the Assumption for over 20 years and will be missed by his dear friends and mentors. Paul was exceedingly generous to those he loved and established friendly and loving connections with everyone who crossed his path.
In addition to his longtime friend Chris Doyle of Salem, Mass., Paul is survived by his brother David and his wife Therese of Charlestown, Rhode Island, his niece Lisa Plante of Franklin, his nephew Matthew and his wife Shellene of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, his nephew Mark and his husband David of Dublin, California, and his great nieces and nephews Alyson Dautel, Callan and Camden Smith, and Gabriella Plante.
