Andre J. 'Andy' Gagnon

Andre J. Gagnon, 89, of Salem, passed away peacefully at Care One at Essex Park in Beverly on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 following a brief illness. Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late Omer J. and Marie R. (Jalbert) Gagnon. He was the seventh son of 10 siblings.
Shortly after graduating from High School, Andy enlisted in the Army and served in Germany during the occupation. Following his service he returned to Salem and shortly after opened Andy’s Luncheonette on Jefferson Avenue in the Castle Hill section of Salem. After it’s closing, he cooked for Dube’s Seafood Restaurant, for many years, until his retirement.
Andy was a quiet and friendly man who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, taking long walks and swimming. He was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan, who never missed the Salem and Beverly Thanksgiving day game. He was known as Pepere, not only to his grandchildren but also to his extended family and friends. His presence and gentle humor will be greatly missed.
Andy is survived by his two sons, James R. Gagnon of Schenectady, NY, Mark D. Gagnon and his wife Tracey of England, his two daughters, Andrea M. Dion of Pleasanton, CA and Carol A. Haefner and her husband Robert of Peabody, his sister, Yvonne Bertalot of South Carolina,. He also leaves nine grandchildren: Lisa Sousa, Robert Haefner, Jr. Rena Battista, Nicole and Matthew Dion, Kayleigh, Benjamin, Victoria and Gabriella Gagnon as well as seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Andy was predeceased by his brothers: Napoleon, Henry, Eli, Omer, Robert ‘Pete’, Roland ‘Mike’, Leo and Roger and his son-in-law, Gregory Dion.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, August 28, 2020 from 9:30 to 11:00 A.M. at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St., [Route 114 / 1-A] Salem. Face masks and social distancing are required. Please refrain from physical contact with the family. Due to the current pandemic, his services will be private.
