Laura Mae (Watkins) Smith, 78, of Anderson, died June 11, 2020 at St. Vincent Anderson after a brief illness.
She was born November 2, 1941 in Kosciusko County, Indiana, the daughter of Devoe and Ruth (VanDorn) Watkins. She graduated from Bourbon High School then earned both bachelors and masters degree from Indiana University. She was an elementary education teacher for 40 years before retiring in 2000. She was a member of New Horizon United Methodist Church and was involved with United Methodist Women; was a board member of Lucille Raines Residence Inc. and a member of United Methodist Women District. She was very involved with her church including choir, board of trustee; taught vacation Bible school and Sunday school class. She enjoyed birds, flowers, yard work including mowing her grass.
Survivors include her husband, Dr. R. Larry Smith whom she married April 3, 1966 in Galveston, IN; her son, Kevin (Denise) Smith of Greenfield; grandson, Jacob Ryan Smith of Greenfield; brother, Donald (Vicki) Watkins of Valparaiso, IN; her sister, Aleta (Stanley) Holderman of Warsaw; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her son, Christopher, and a brother, Loyd Watkins.
Services will be held on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at New Horizon United Methodist Church with Pastor Brad Hensley officiating. Friends may visit at the church Tuesday from 11 a.m. until the service.
Memorial contributions may be given to United Methodist Women.
