Mary Ann Flot

Mary Ann (Nee) Flot, 92, died Tuesday, April 28, 2020 at Essex Park Rehabilitation & Nursing Center in Beverly following a long illness. She was the wife of the late Edward T. Flot, with whom she shared 51 years of marriage. Mary was the daughter of the late Coleman and Delia (Canavan) Nee.
Born and raised in Cashel, a small town in County Galway, Mary emigrated from Ireland to the United States in 1954 and first settled in Boston, Massachusetts. She was employed as a waitress for many years at Bailey’s Coffee Shop and worked part time doing house work for affluent families in Boston.
Mary married Edward in 1957 and gave birth to their son Joseph in 1964 and the family moved to Salem in 1965. Mary was very religious and was a devoted Catholic. In the early years she and her family attended weekly Mass at Mission Hill Church in Roxbury. Following the family’s move to Salem, she became an active member of the Immaculate Conception Parish. She was also a member of the Holy Name Society, The Legion of Mary and the Irish Temperance League.
Mary’s hobbies were caring for animals, especially cats, taking walks at Forest River Park and the Salem Willows Amusement Park. She enjoyed spending time with her family as well as planning visits with her large extended family during the Holidays. Her other interests included collecting and displaying photos of loved ones throughout her home as well as pictures of her native homeland. Mary loved Irish music and dancing and attended various social events at the Ancient Order of Hibernians (AOH) in Salem.
Mary is survived by her son Joseph A.P. Flot and his wife Mary E. Toler-Flot. Two granddaughters, Ceili E. and Alanna M. Flot both of Salem and her sister Ann M. and her husband, Joseph A. Giuliotti of Revere, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins here in the United States, England and Ireland. She was predeceased by three sisters, Nora W. and her husband Thomas J. King of Holbrook, Bridget and her husband Daniel Mulchahy of Ireland and Margaret and her husband, Tony Brooks of England, two brothers, John Nee (Mary’s twin) and Patrick Nee.
