Anton Mavretic

Anton Mavretic, 84, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2109 surrounded by family.
He was born in Slovenia on December 11, 1934 in the village of Boldraz. He emigrated to the USA arriving in NYC harbor in 1957. From there he went to live with his Uncle Mike in Denver. He earned an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Denver in 1959, a graduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Denver in 1961, and a Ph.D. at Penn State University in 1968.
He was a true scientist and thoroughly loved his research. His work was also his passion and hobby. He lived and breathed his work, he was famous for saying work was play to him. Dr. Mavretic was an Adjunct professor at Penn State University, Adjunct professor at Northeastern University, Post Doc Staff Member and Project Engineer at MIT Center for Space Research, Senior Staff Member at Harvard University Center for Astrophysics and Associate Professor of Electrical, Computer and Systems Engineering at Boston University.
In March of 1964 he married the love of his life Martina Darinka Mavretic. Some of his achievements are NASA Achievement Citation Plaque for work performed on Wind Spacecraft Satellite. He received the Analog Devices Professorship Chair at Boston University, Favorite professor award (voted on by students at BU), NASA Achievement award, Washington, D.C., for work on the Voyager I and II missions. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi and Tau Alpha Pi, both EE honor societies and a lifetime member of IEEE. He received two NASA Achievement awards from the Goddard Space Flight Center for work performed on Explorer Mission and the NASA Wind Satellite. He was a lifetime member of The Slovenian Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2007. He received a Medal of Honor for lifetime achievement from Boris Pahor (President of Slovenia) in 2017.

His first job was at Westinghouse in Pennsylvania as an electrical engineer and he worked on the color TV project. He was a consultant to several national engineering companies and as recently as a few months ago, was working at WPI with students and professors. He has 10 US Patents to his name. He loved working with students and teaching, he always said it kept him young.

All these accolades aside, he was a dedicated family man and when he came home from work he was just Dad. He loved going to Cape Cod to spend time at his family home with his grandkids. He was a devoted father to his two daughters and was most proud of being a grandfather and fiercely loved his grandchildren, Ian, Emily, Marc and Eric.
He is survived by his wife, Darinka Mavretic of Natick and their late son Gregory Mavretic. He is also survived by his two daughters Irene Carrick and Natalie Willi, sons-in-law James Carrick and John Willi and grandchildren Ian and Emily Carrick and Marc and Eric Willi.
Memorial Visitations will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2019 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the John C. Bryant Funeral Home, 56 Pemberton Road (off Rt. 30), Wayland.

Family and friends are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial on Wednesday, November 27, 2019 at 10:00 am at Good Shepherd Parish at St, Zepherin Church, 99 Main Street (Rt 27), Wayland.

In lieu of flowers, his family kindly suggests that memorial gifts in Anton’s name may be sent to the Genitourinary Oncology Dept., Dana Farber Cancer Institute, 450 Brookline Ave, Boston, MA 02215.
