James R. Stewart

James R. Stewart, 87, of Salem, passed away peacefully at Ledgewood Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Center in Beverly, following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Lucille P. (L’Heureux) Stewart with whom he shared a wonderful 55 years of marriage.
Born and raised in Salem, he was the son of the late John H. and Emma O. (Savageau) Stewart. A graduate of Salem High School, Jim served in Korea with the Army as a Sergeant, for the 24th Division Artillery. Following his tour of duty he returned to Salem and attended Chauncy Hall Preparatory School. He was a graduate of Wentworth Institute in Boston and first worked for the United Shoe in Beverly where he met the love of his life, Lucille. For many years Jim worked as a mechanical engineer for Osram Sylvania in Danvers where he held several patents for his designs. He retired in 1996.
Jim was devoted to his family and extended family. He enjoyed his home, doing home projects and solving any mechanical problem. He was an avid reader and sports fan, especially with his children’s sport activities.
In addition to his wife Lucille, he is survived by his four children, Lorelee S. Stewart of Salem, Gary J. Stewart and his wife Christine of Dover, DE, Donna L. Curley of Salem, Michael J. Stewart of Salem, a brother, Arthur Stewart and his wife Beverly and his sister Margaret Stewart all of Brewster. He was affectionately known as Ga and Grampy to his devoted grandchildren, Michael, Erin, Jessica , Megan and Sarah Curley, Matthew & Danielle Stewart. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings, John & Howard Stewart and Anita Dash and his son-in-law Richard Curley.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours at the Levesque Funeral Home, 163 Lafayette St. [ Route 114 / 1-A ] Salem on Wednesday, January 16, 2019 from 10:00 to 11:30 AM to be followed by his service at 11:40 AM. A committal service with military honors will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
