Emmanuel James Pappas, passed away December 27, 2018 just 4 days prior to his 95th birthday. He leaves behind several nieces and nephews and their families who all knew him affectionately as ‘Uncle Mino’.
Manny, as he was known by his friends, was the last of 10 sons of the late James and Olympia Pappas, a family that has been part of the Webster community since the early 1900’s.
Mr. Pappas was a U.S. Army veteran of WWII and graduated with a mechanical engineering degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1952.
He spent most of his career working as a program analyst monitoring design and construction costs for public office buildings nationwide for the General Services Administration in Washington, D.C.
Since his retirement in 1985, Emmanuel stayed active managing rental properties and serving as the President of the local AHEPA Chapter.
He enjoyed wintering in Florida to pursue his love of playing tennis year-round, which kept him active and fit well into his 90’s.
Manny, as his tennis colleagues called him, was ranked #1 in New England by the USTA in 1988 and ranked in the top ten nationally as a 90-and-above player in 2014.
After supporting his younger brothers throughout their lives, Emmanuel has ensured his spirit of giving lives on through scholarships he established at WPI and both the District and local levels of AHEPA, and through his generosity to Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Webster that his family has supported since its founding in 1922.
A Funeral Service will be Friday, January 4, 2019 at 10 AM in Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 35 Lake Parkway, followed by burial with Full Military Honors provided by the Webster-Dudley Veterans’ Council at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
