Obituary

Mona M. Macomber , 97, died November 5, surrounded by loved ones. She was predeceased by her husband Roger F. Macomber, to whom she was married for 65 years.

She was born in Fall River, MA to the late George and Mary (Hanchulak) Wuchter. She graduated from BMC Durfee High School in 1938, where her violin expertise earned her the position of Concert Master of the school orchestra. She also played in a trio with her sisters Georgina, on the cello, and Vera, on the piano.

While still a teenager, Mona met her future husband Roger on the beach at Elephant Rock Beach Club. They dated while he was attending Northeastern University and she was working at Firestone. They married during WWII while he was on leave from the army, and thereafter she traveled with him to the military bases in Georgia, San Antonio, and Wyoming before he was sent to the Pacific Theater.

After the war they lived in Boston where she worked at Westinghouse Electric Corporation and S.S. Pierce & Co. Job opportunities took them to Connecticut where she was a member of the Manchester Hospital Auxiliary. But their hearts were always in Westport Massachusetts and they became summer residents in 1960. And in1988, they retired and became full-time
residents of Westport, enjoying beach walks, boating, bridge, and gardening.

Always ready for a party, Mona was known for her delicious pies, her knitting skills, and her keen interest in political affairs. In her later years, she became an amateur naturalist as she observed horses, fawns, foxes, white squirrels, turkeys, hawks, and more from her window.

She leaves a daughter, Nancy R.M. Whitin, and her husband James.

Arrangements are private.
