SPRINGFIELD ~ Thomas R. “Tom” Foley, 87, of the East Forest Park section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Sunday, July 1, 2018. He passed into Eternal Life at his home surrounded by the care and comfort of his loving family. He was born in Springfield on May 3, 1931, the beloved son of the late Thomas P. and Alice J. (Clark) Foley. He was raised in the Brightwood section of Springfield, graduated from Chestnut Junior High School and Classical High School, and was a lifelong resident of Springfield. He served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War and attained the rank of Gunner’s Mate Second Class. He served aboard the USS Vulcan the USS Alcor and received the Navy Occupation Medal and the National Defense Service Medal. Following his military service, he furthered his education and received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Management from American International College in Springfield where he also was a member of their Golf team. He was employed by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for 32 years and retired in 1992 as the Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Revenue. He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church and Holy Cross Church, both in Springfield. He was also a member of the Adriatic Club in Springfield and the East Springfield American Legion Post 420. He was an avid New England sports fan and enjoyed playing golf. He also enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren at their sporting events. He had a deep faith in God and dearly loved his family. He was predeceased by his beloved wife and best friend, Ann M. (Mahoney) Foley. They were married on December 29, 1956 at Holy Cross Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 49 years of happiness together. Tom was also predeceased by his loving son, Thomas P. Foley who was Called Home on October 16, 2017. Tom leaves his four loving children, Christopher D. Foley and Jacqueline Bien, of Princeton, MA, Ellen M. Foley and Kurt Dahdah of Agawam, and Timothy C. Foley and his wife, Elizabeth, and Peter M. Foley and his wife, Katie, all of Springfield; his dear daughter-in-law, Susan Foley of Oakham, MA; his seven cherished grandchildren, Jacqueline Foley, Shannon Foley and her fiancé, Salvador Saldana, Lauren Robillard and her husband, Travis, Christopher Foley, Andrew Foley, Olivia Foley and Alexander Sweeney; his dear sister, Patricia Rivest and her husband, Paul, of Springfield; his dear brother-in-law, Dick Schafer of Yarmouth Port, MA; and his many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Foley and Mahoney families. Tom’s family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to his many caregivers and the Meals on Wheels program for all their assistance. His Funeral will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018 beginning at the St. Pierre~Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. His Burial with United States Navy Military Honors will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. His family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, July 6, 2018 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. For those who prefer, his family requests that memorial donations be made in his memory to the Sisters of Saint Joseph, 577 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104 or to the Sacred Heart Church Renovation Fund, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104.
