Neil Joseph Savage

Neil Joseph Savage, 88, of West Roxbury, passed away April 17 after a short illness. He was born in Roslindale, son of the late John T. and Theresa (Leahy) Savage. He graduated from Mission High School in 1948, then joined the US Navy, where he served in Philadelphia during the Korean conflict. He returned to Boston and worked many years in the insurance industry, before beginning a career as a freelance writer. He specialized in history, writing “Extraordinary Tenure,” a recounting of Massachusetts politicians from John Adams to Tip O’Neill, as well as histories of the Forest Hills Cemetery, the Boston Water and Sewer Works, and several local parishes. He also wrote a work of fiction, “Jonathan Baker’s House on Lime Street.” He was a member of the Lions Club community service organization. During the busing era, he served on a Racial Ethnic Parent Council designed to help with the details of school desegregation. He was appointed by Governor Michael Dukakis as an Associate Commissioner of the Metropolitan District Commission. He served on the Massachusetts State Archives Commission, and worked as an archivist for The Roxbury Latin School. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Margaret (Peg Rogers) and six sons, Neil Jr. of Lowell, Kevin of Los Angeles, Brian of West Roxbury, Christopher of Winthrop, Timothy and Kyungshin (Lim) of Reston, VA, and Matthew and Sandra (Piccolo) of Wilmington, and four grandchildren, Anthony, Declan, and Macy of Wilmington and Aidan of Reston. Brother of the late Sister Theresa of Jesus (Mary) and Francis X. Brother-in-law of Claire C. Campbell and Paul E. Rogers. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces, great-grand-nieces, and cousins. Funeral from the William J. Gormley Funeral Home, 2055 Centre Street, WEST ROXBURY on Friday April 20, 2018 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Theresa of Avila Church at 10 o’clock.
