Helen Virginia (Bregou) Pappas died peacefully in her home, Wednesday, March 21, 2018, at the age of 89. Her husband, and best friend of 67 years, Charles A. Pappas, passed away in 2015.
Helen is survived by her daughter Sandi Kunkel and her husband Gerry Kunkel of Webster, her son Chuck Pappas and his wife Ginny of Dudley; 6 grandchildren, Scott Kunkel and his wife Kathleen, Lee Kunkel and his wife Ashley, Andrew Pappas, Joanna Donahue and her husband Joe, Alex Pappas, Gillian Martin and her husband Jake; 5 great grandchildren, Kaiden, Hanna, Teegan, Nova and Rowan, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Louis and Virginia (Johnson) Bregou, and 2 brothers, Fotis and Paul Bregou.
Helen grew up in Worcester and graduated from Commerce High School and also Bregou Hair Dressing School, which was owned by her father. She worked as a bookkeeper and hairdresser at her dad’s hair salon for many years and spent many years assisting her mom “Nene” in operating the Colonial Inn at Nantasket Beach. Helen was her husband’s biggest supporter of their ‘families’ business, Park ‘n Shop Supermarket. She was a member and supporter of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church in Webster where she was very active in the Philoptochos Society and served on the church council. In addition, she was also a member of the Eastern Star and Hubbard Regional Hospital Women’s Guild.
Helen and Charlie traveled the world together. Some of their trips included: and audience with the Pope in Rome, Greece, Jerusalem, The Great Barrier Reef, Pyramids of Egypt, Taj Mahal, and of course, celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in Atlantis with the whole family. They enjoyed skiing with their best friends Ray and Mary Goretti and spent most of their winters at their ‘home away from home’ watching dolphins and sunsets in Marco Island, FL.
Helen loved spending time with her family, especially with her great grandchildren, and enjoying knitting afghans and sweaters for them.
She will be missed by her family, and also by the lives that she has touched throughout her life.
Helen’s family would like to thank her caregivers Mercy and Agnes, the Webster Police and EMS departments for their service and compassion during her last remaining months.
Helen’s calling hours will be held from 5:30-8:30 PM on Friday, March 23, 2018 at Sts. Constantine & Helen Greek Orthodox Church, 37 Lake Parkway, Webster, a Trisagion Service will be at 6PM on Friday. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 10 AM in the Church, followed by burial next to her beloved Charlie in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
