Obituary

SOMERSET – Richard Silvia, age 68 of Somerset, passed away after a short illness on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the son of the late Manuel R. & Hilda (Medeiros) Silvia.

Richie started his teaching career as a Substitute Teacher at the original Henry Lord School. He then went on to a 34 year career with the Somerset School Dept., teaching History and English at the Somerset Middle School and High School.

He was a parishioner of St. John of God Church, a coach & president for 25 yrs. for the Somerset Little League, a Softball coach for the A.S.A Bobcats & Wildcats, & a Softball coach at Somerset High School. He was also a member of the Somerset Progressive Club, the Somerset Playground & Recreation Committee, the Brayton Club of St. John of God Church, Somerset Am. Legion & Amvets, a D.A.R.E. advisor, and a Constable for the Commonwealth of MA. Among Richie’s many interests, he loved to play slots at Atlantic City and spend quality time with his extended family and friends.

He is survived by his close family friend: Heidi (Frizado) Dagwan, her husband Ray & their daughters: Marissa Thrasher & Kayla Dagwan (Richie’s goddaughter); grandchildren: Sophia & Tyler Thrasher Jr. & Richie’s brother: Kenneth Silvia (wife Doreen) & their children: Kenny Silvia (Richie’s godson) & Krystle Silvia. He was the brother of the late Joanne Picard.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Town of Somerset Veterans Department, 140 Wood Street, Somerset, MA 02726.

His funeral will take place from the Manuel Rogers & Sons Funeral Home, Inc. 1521 N. Main St. Fall River on Friday at 9:00 A.M. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial in St. John of God Church at 10:00 A.M. Interment in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Somerset.
