Obituary

Mr. Edward Stoddard Scovel, a Medford resident since the early 1950’s and beloved husband of the late Lillian Semonian Scovel, passed away on the evening of February 1st 2018. He was 90 years old.

Born in Chicago, Illinois on September 27, 1927, he was one of a set of identical twins born to James Dean Scovel & Mary Edna Scovel (Stoddard).

Ed joined the U.S. Navy in 1946 & studied Electronics which he already had vast experience in as he and his twin brother Dick had been building crystal radios since their early days in Grammar school. Ed was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1948 but remained in the reserves where he was called back in 1949 for the Korean conflict and remained with the navy until 1951.

During his final year in the navy while stationed at the Charlestown Navy Yard he met the love of his life, Lillian Irene Semonian, at a YMCA dance at City Square in Boston. Within a few years, Lil & Ed were married, settled in Medford and started their family. First came Lynn Marie in 1954, then Richard John in 1957 and finally, Diane Carol in 1962.

In the early years after the Navy, Ed remained at the Charlestown navy yard as a civilian worker but moved over to the Federal Aviation Administration at Boston’s Logan airport when an opening presented itself. An expert in Radar, Ed moved up quickly and ultimately became Radar Supervisor who headed the team of technicians responsible for testing, repairing & upgrading the airport’s radar systems. In 1982 at 55 years old Ed retired from the FAA to enjoy his family, who was everything to him, and his love of flying his own airplanes. In his late 40’s he bought his first airplane, but before it was all over he had owned 3 of them.

Ed is survived by his loving children; Lynn Scovel Chester & her husband Robert M. Chester of Cambridge, Richard J. & his wife Carole M. Scovel of Wakefield and Diane Scovel Galvin of Waltham and grandchildren; Robert and Ian Chester and Jonathan and Colin Galvin.
