Joseph T. Devlin of Framingham, MA (formerly of Boston), a retired clinical social worker and educator, passed away peacefully at St. Patrick's Manor nursing home. He was age 94.
Born in Boston, he attended St. Francis Xavier School, Roslindale High School, Boston College and Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. He was a veteran of World War II from 1943-1946 and attended a yearlong pre-meteorology program at Amherst College while in the service.
Mr. Devlin spent most of his professional career at the Boston University School of Medicine, Division of Psychiatry, where he held an appointment as Assistant Professor. He also was a social worker with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, where he had participated in the early planning and development of the Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center in Boston's South End. In the latter part of his career, he was a gerontologist, and he led an inter-disciplinary team at Boston University Medical Center in gerontologic mental health.
He had been a Board member of community organizations, such The Salvation Army Harbor Lights Center, Cooper Community Center, The Travelers Aid Society and the Central Boston Elder Services. Among his most recent awards and commendations was 1998 Harry Dow Award for Distinguished Service to Older Bostonians presented by Central Boston Elder Services.
An avid golfer, he had been a member of Cummaquid Golf Club in Yarmouth Port, MA.
Mr. Devlin was devoted father of Joseph P. and daughter-in-law Katherine of Wellesley, MA and loving grandfather of Margaret and Philip Devlin. He also is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. He had been married to the late Mary T. (Lane), and he was predeceased by his sisters Eleanor Boyle, Louise Devlin, Mary Scannell and Frances Devlin, and his brothers, Thomas and James.
Family and friends will honor and remember Joseph Devlin’s life by gathering for a visiting hour in the Holy Family Chapel of St. Patrick’s Manor, Framingham on Saturday October 21, beginning at 9:00 am. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the Holy Family Chapel on Saturday morning at 10 am. Interment will follow in Holyhood Cemetery, Brookline. www.lawlerfuneralhome.com
