Obituary

WORCESTER-Agathi (Kalis) Spanakis, 66, of Worcester passed away Wednesday, August 23 at the Rose Monahan Hospice House.

Her husband of 36 years, George J. Spanakis died in 2009. She leaves a son, Dr. Spiro G. Spanakis of Sherwsbury; a daughter, Dr. Nicole C. Spanakis of Worcester and nieces and nephews. She was born in Istanbul, Turkey, daughter of the later, Spiro and Marika (Kounadis) Kalis and moved to Worcester at a young age. She graduated from Anna Marie College with a degree in elementary education.

Agathi owned and operated Athol House of Pizza with her husband for 34 years until his passing in 2009 and recently sold her family business in May after 42 years. Agathi was a longtime member of Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral and was active in the Ladies Philoptochos Society, the Daughters of Penelope, sang in the choir, worked on the festival and nursery school committees and taught in Sunday school.

The Funeral will be held on Saturday, August 26 from CALLAHAN FAY CASWELL Funeral Home with a Service at 10AM in Saint Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 102 Russell Street. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visiting Hours are on Friday, August 25 from 4 to 7PM with a Trisagion Service at 6:30PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Cathedral or to UMASS Memorial Foundation, Levine Cancer Center, PO Box 2795, Worcester, 01613.
