CHICOPEE - George J. Bissonnette, Jr., 65, of Chicopee, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, August 17, 2017. He passed into Eternal Life with his beloved wife, Bunny, and his children by his side. He was born on July 20, 1952 in Holyoke to the late George J. Bissonnette, Sr. and Anna J. (McAlpine) Bissonnette. He was raised in both Holyoke and Southampton. George married his love, Joan D. “Bunny” (Gelinas) Bissonnette at Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in Chicopee on May 19, 1978. Following their marriage, they moved to the Willimansett section of Chicopee where they lived for over 39 years. George was a graduate of Smith Vocational High School in Northampton, where he majored in auto mechanics and began a lifelong passion for fixing cars and anything mechanical. In his younger years, George served as a volunteer firefighter and Emergency Medical Technician for the town of Southampton. Later, George worked at Dan Wesson Firearms for many years until the company closed. As a jack-of-all trades, George was also skilled in electrical, plumbing, masonry and carpentry work. During his free time, he loved to tinker in the basement on various mechanical projects and fix old cars. George was a patient, kind man and loving father who demonstrated the virtue of charity his entire life by helping others when he saw a need, such as fixing a colleague’s car for free or snow blowing an elderly neighbor’s driveway. His children will always remember his self-giving love to help them and others as he displayed a hard work ethic throughout his whole life. George leaves behind his wife and soul mate, Bunny; his loving daughter, Dr. Janelle L. Gagnon “Little Bear” and her husband, Jason D. Gagnon; his sons, George Joel Bissonnette “Mr. B” and Edmund J. Bissonnette “Squash”. He also leaves his two beautiful grandchildren, Lily Alise Bissonnette and Logan Daniel Gagnon. Besides his parents, George was also predeceased by his sister, Barbara F.
