WEST BOYLSTON – Surrounded by his beloved family and fulfilling his wish of dying at home, Mitchell C. Batt passed peacefully on Sunday, August 13, 2017 at the age of 91.
Mitchell Batt (formerly Batbouta) was born in Pawtucket, RI, a son of Syrian immigrant parents, the late Charles and Mabel (Latfy) Batbouta. Following the death of his father at the age of 8, Mitchell and his family relocated to Worcester in 1934 and settled in the Rice Square area. Like most kids in those days, Mitchell enjoyed the friendship of many neighborhood kids. He maintained many of those friendships his entire life. He went on to graduate from Commerce High School and later earned a degree in accounting from Becker College. Like many other young men in his neighborhood and in countless neighborhoods across America, Mitchell joined the ranks of the US Army, serving in the European and Pacific Theaters of the War and with the Army of the Occupation in Japan. He was trained as a radio repairman, a valuable asset in every group, as he maintained all communications methods. Following his graduation and the War, Mitchell became an accountant and comptroller for the American Supply Company, a retail furniture dealer with stores in Worcester, Boston, Fitchburg and Framingham. Following their closing in 1979, he became the comptroller for Sani-Mate in Worcester. A public accountant, Mitchell provided tax services for many families through the years, maintaining his ties in the Rice Square area. He loved to play cards and could be found once a week playing with the same groups of his childhood friends for many years. In 1946, Mitchell met the love of his life, Virginia M O’Connor of Fitchburg and married three years later. Together, they shared 52 years of marriage prior to her death in 2002. Mitchell and his family enjoyed every summer at Salisbury Beach, MA where they have made countless enjoyable memories since 1963.
Mitchell was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and the Greendale Retired Men’s Club.
He will be forever remembered and lovingly missed by his three children; Linda M. Malgieri of West Boylston, Rosemary C. Kusy and her husband, Robert of West Boylston and John M. Batt and his wife, Barbara of Exton, PA; his 11 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many close friends including Dr. Laurence Cignoli, with whom he was a regular at many local dining establishments.. He was predeceased by his son-in-law, Robert Malgieri and by his brother, John Batbouta in 2001.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mitchell’s family on Wednesday, August 16th, from 4-7 p.m. at the FAY BROTHERS Funeral Home, 1 West Boylston Street, West Boylston. His funeral will be held on Thursday, August 17th with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, 111 Worcester Street, West Boylston. Burial with military honors will follow in Mount Vernon Cemetery, West Boylston. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the VNA Care Hospice, 130 Thomas Street, Worcester, MA 01608.
