Mary (Begley) Murphy

SPRINGFIELD – Mary (Begley) Murphy, 90, of Springville, Pennsylvania and a former longtime resident of Phoenix Terrace in the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. She passed into Eternal Life at the Regional Hospital in Scranton, Pennsylvania surrounded by all the memories she loved and cherished. She was born in Ballyferriter, County Kerry, Ireland on March 7, 1927, a beloved daughter of the late Thomas and Deborah (Fitzgerald) Begley. She was raised and schooled in Ireland and came to Springfield around 1948. She lived on Cass Street in the Liberty Heights section of Springfield and later moved to Phoenix Terrace around 1970, where she resided until moving to Springville in 2012 to live with her daughter, Deborah and her son-in-law, Geno. Mary was employed for over 21 years as a nurse aide at Saint Luke’s Home on Spring Street in Springfield and retired in 1992. She was a longtime communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and currently was a communicant of Saint Mary Church in Montrose, Pennsylvania. Most of all, she was a wonderful homemaker to her family and showered them with her love and affection which was returned to her a thousand fold. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, Joseph J. Murphy who was Called Home on February 27, 2008. They were married on June 6, 1953 at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield and were blessed with over 54 years of happiness together. She leaves her five loving children, Deborah A. Michinski and her husband, Geno, of Springville, PA, Eileen T. O’Shea and her husband, John, of Southampton, MA, Thomas J. Murphy and his wife, Michelle, of Brewster, MA, Mary B. Shaw and her husband, Thomas, of Sturbridge, MA and Noreen F. Ryan and her husband, John, of Worthington, MA; her 11 cherished grandchildren, Andrea and Caitlin Michinski, Christopher O’Shea and his wife, Sara, Connor O’Shea, Eamonn O’Shea and his wife, Sheena, Kailah Murphy, Rachel, Lesley and Eileen Shaw and Zachary and Hannah Lavin; her cherished great-grandson, Seamus O’Shea; her dear twin brothers, Brendan Begley and his wife, Ann, of Kildare, County Kildare, Ireland and Patrick Begley of England; her dear sister, Eileen Keightley of West Hartford, Connecticut; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins, friends and extended members of the Murphy and Begley families. Besides her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by her dear brother, James Begley; and her two dear sisters, Nora and Bridie Begley. Her funeral will be held on Monday morning, August 7, 2017 beginning at the St. Pierre – Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday morning, August 7, 2017 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. before the Mass. In lieu of flowers, her family has requested that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
