Obituary

Mrs. Rita Margaret (Carney) Smeltzer, a resident of Lawrence, formerly of Andover and beloved wife of William C. Smeltzer, III, passed away at her home on Sunday morning, May 28, 2017. She was 74 years old.

Born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, on May 20, 1943, she was the beloved daughter of the late John P. and Margaret C. (Winters) Carney. Mrs. Smeltzer was a very devoted wife, mother and Nana, always wishing to spend her time with her family. She enjoyed camping, visiting the beach, square dancing and sewing. She will be dearly missed.

Besides her beloved husband, William, she is survived by her loving children: William C. and his wife Robin G. Smeltzer of Salem, New Hampshire and Rita M. Smeltzer and James M. Smeltzer both of Lawrence, cherished granddaughters: Alexandria and Annalisa, her siblings: Barbara Lear and her companion Dwight Sidmore of Newbury, MA, Patricia Perron and her husband Kenneth of Derry, NH, Margaret Hannemann and her husband Richard of Chester, NH, Jean Marie Cardillo and her husband William of Salem, NH and Stephen Carney and his wife Pamela of Methuen and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was also the sister of the late Joan (Carney) MacNeil and John Carney.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Church, 43 Essex Street, Andover on Thursday, June 1, 2017, at 9:30 AM. Relatives and friends are most welcome to attend. Calling hours will be held in the Burke-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 390 North Main Street, Andover on Wednesday, May 31, 2017, from 4 to 7 PM.
