Gladys Scipien
4/9/2017

Gladys Mary Scipien, daughter of the late Frank and Mary (Targosz) Scipien of Chicopee, MA, died peacefully in Boston and in the presence of her close friends on April 9, 2017. She was a graduate of Chicopee High School and received a BS degree in nursing from Adelphi University. At the Nassau County (NY) Medical Center, she was a staff nurse and head nurse in pediatrics. Her continued clinical practice at Syracuse Memorial Hospital, an affiliate of Upstate Medical Center (NY) provided her with exposure to large numbers of nursing students which raised her interest in nursing education. After obtaining an MS in Parent-Child Nursing from the Boston University (BU) School of Nursing, Ms. Scipien was appointed to the faculty at BU School of Nursing where she obtained tenure and the rank of Associate Professor. After the BU School of Nursing closed, Professor Scipien taught at the University of Massachusetts Boston College of Nursing and Health Sciences until her retirement. Among her many professional honors were induction into the American Academy of Nursing and being named a Living Legend in Massachusetts Nursing in 2013 by Massachusetts Association of Registered Nurses (now ANA Massachusetts). She was the Vice-President of the Nursing Archives Associates, Boston University.

Although Ms. Scipien leaves no survivors, she leaves behind a godson, Benjamin Thiefels of San Diego, CA, her close friends Sarah B. Pasternack of Stoughton (MA) and Barbara Segal of Hinesburg (VT), who she described as “incredibly kind and thoughtful.” She also leaves many friends in the greater Boston area and in Western Massachusetts. She leaves her dog, Buddy, her constant companion, who was responsible for the laughter and the joy he brought to her every day.
