Georgina (Freeman) Southern, 83, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away on Friday December 31, 2010 at the Caritas Norwood Hospital in Norwood. She was the beloved wife of the late Kendall B. Southern, to whom she was wed for 54 years at the time of his death on February 18, 2005.
Born in Attleboro, MA on October 17, 1927, she was a daughter of the late William and Marian (Duguid) Freeman.
She was a graduate of Mansfield High School, had attended Colby Jr. College in New Hampshire and was a graduate of Pierce College in Boston.
In addition to being a dedicated homemaker to her loving family, Mrs. Southern had also been employed at the former Sears Roebuck in Foxboro and when younger was a former secretary at the First National Bank of Boston.
Georgina was a member of the Mansfield Congregational Church and was a former member of the Daughters of American Revolution. She loved traveling, which included trips to Canada, music and playing the piano. She had a special place in her heart for animals, dogs in particular and loved residing and raising her family in the country setting of Mansfield.
She is survived by her devoted children Craig B. Southern of Hemlock, New York, Carol F. Unger and her husband Gregory of Norton, Robert A. Southern of Dracut and the late Peter D. Southern. The dear sister of Wilma Weibel of Rumford, Georgina is also survived by her cherished grandchildren Cori-Beth Southern, Kelli Southern and Chad Unger.
Funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Monday January 10th at 11:00 A.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North Main St. Mansfield. Burial will follow at 1:00 P.M. at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
Visiting hours will be held on Sunday January 9th from 3-6 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home.
Due to the limitation of flowers allowed at the National Cemetery, Georgina’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to the Mansfield Shelter Friends Inc. Building Fund ,P.O. Box 25, Mansfield, MA 02048.
