I am so sorry to hear of Jeanne’s passing. I was her homemaker for the last 8 months and enjoyed working with her and her sarcastic sense of humor. My condolences to her family and friends.

Mrs Stella was my first grade teacher and my chess teacher. We travelled throughout New England to compete in tournaments. I’ll never forget her and how much she cared about me and my friends.

I always enjoyed reading Jeanne's newspaper articles and her books on Salem. Thank you for your contributions to knowledge and history. May you fly free now. You will be missed by many in Salem and elsewhere.

I am deeply saddened today to discover this wonderful lady has left us. In 1969, this 6 year old had the greatest fortune to be in her first class straight out of college at Saltonstall School. It was also my first classroom experience as I had not attended kindergarten. She was an amazing teacher. I have strong memories of that year all because of her. I remember the classroom. The piano, the blackboard. She played and sang to us frequently. In 1969, the top movie was Butch Cassidy/Sundance Kid. She played "Raindrops keep falling on my head." Many times that year. We all knew the words after a month and happily sang our hearts out as she played along. It's a top 10 song for me after 50 years. And of course, it always reminds me of her. She taught us colors. And the telephone game. And about evaporation. And about how things grow, like beans. And kindness and sharing. And making learning fun. And most importantly, how to read. Dick and Jane became our friends and teachers. She gave me my superpower, I can read well over 400 words/minute. I can read backwords and upside down. Because she gave me that first kernel of knowledge, I never stopped reading, anything. Everything. It has served me very well. I have her last book and wanted to meet with her to get it signed over coffee but covid scared her well after and I respected her wishes. In her later years she was just as prolific in her adopted hometown where she kept giving to us all. I had many great school teachers in primary, high and college. But she was the first. She set the bar. Pretty damn high too. An amazing teacher and human. I will always love you Miss Jeanne Stella
