Sonia and I were blessed to have known Paul for many years as a colleague and friend. He was such a fine person in so many ways. We offer our condolences to the Helmreich family.

I have always been grateful to Professor Helmreich for one of the critical lessons of my education: don't blindly memorize, but look for the logic of an answer. One day he asked which countries didn't join the Holy Roman Empire. All the class strained trying to remember what we'd memorized. But Professor Helmreich told us to think -- and figure it out. Turkey was one answer, a non-Christian country, another the Papal States which outranked the secular countries. It was a great lesson -- using facts you can deduce the answer.

To Paul's dear wife Zeph, his children, their spouses, and to all members of Paul's extended circle of family and friends: My wife Myong and my daughter Sangita join me in sending our heart-felt condolences. Paul was all those wonderful things that his obituary details. Beyond that, to us, he was also a dear friend since 1977. We fondly recall many get-togethers at his family home and ours, and I, in addition, the many valuable intellectual exchanges that began 44 years ago between us and continued on until just months ago. I will miss his liveliness and humor as well.

Paul Helmreich was a colleague and friend during and beyond my years as an active Wheaton faculty member. Among many dedicated teachers, Paul was a special model for me of the well-prepared and involved professor. The strength of his commitment to Wheaton, the town of Norton and its schools, and his family (several of whom my wife Lorna and I know personally) set a standard for me in my own career. I give thanks for Paul's life and example. May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

My condolences to the Helmreich family. I have worked with Alan at Sanford High School for many years. It's easy to see where he got his love of history and education! Dr, Helmreich definitely lived a full and productive life that should be well celebrated.

I was shocked to hear of Paul's passing. I will miss taking care of Sara for Zeph and Paul, and I will miss our wonderful conversations. May he rest in peace.

My heartfelt sympathy, prayers and love go out to Paul's family. I have warm memories from Old Taunton Ave. where our kids grew up. (Guitar bands in my basement, Norton high school band, etc.) Paul's commitment and invaluable contribution to his family, friends, Wheaton and our town can't be overstated. During controversial town issues, I would tell my friends to listen to Paul Helmreich! He will be missed.

Paul Helmreich was my faculty advisor at Wheaton. His guidance led to my being a history major--how else was I to hear more of his wonderful teaching. As an alumna, I never failed to connect with him whenever I visited the campus--He always knew my name! It was good to see how happy he was the last time I saw him, shortly after he remarried. My condolences to his entire family. You have lost a very fine gentleman. Myra Reingold Promisel "65
