Westwood, MA,
Coach Hargreaves was my spring track coach at Westwood High from 1991-1994. I will always remember how happy he was when we won the TVL title in 94 after beating Holliston and finishing the season undefeated. On the bus ride home from away meets Coach would always check over the results, noting personal bests, etc. This time he just sat back with the biggest smile taking in the team's celebration the whole ride back to WHS. The last time I saw Coach was a four years ago when I ran into him at my daughter's middle school track meet which he was officiating. It was great to see him, he looked exactly the same as I remembered him in high school and handed me an updated WHS Track&Field History booklet (said he always carried an extra around in case he ran into his former athletes). He was such a good teacher (in the best dept at WHS) and coach and an even better man. My deepest condolences for your loss.

Our sincere condolences to the Hargreaves family. As my math teacher and coach of 4 years he exemplified good sportsmanship and hard work. Life lessons from a good man. Thank you.

I’m very sorry to hear of Richards passing. He and I were great friends when we were quite young. He was always thoughtful, even as a young person. I always knew he would be a great teacher due to his patience and intellect. I will always remember him fondly.

A WHS '75 myself, I think of Mr. Hargreaves periodically for the things he taught me and the kindness with which he did so. I remember him as a tall, lean track coach who was also an athlete himself, so I am surprised to hear of him passing away so young. His calculus class effectively derived calculus from its roots. I also learned as much about the Newtonian rules of motion here as I did in Physics class. Above all, it was fun and I still remember and use some of the lessons learned to this day. He also taught a second-level programming class at WHS that introduced data structures and analysis of algorithms. I still remember being impressed that he could reduce the game of Nim to a program that could make it unbeatable. Fair winds Dick. Trivia: Mr. Hargreaves and WHS History teacher John Thro Sloan were classmates, both being WHS Class of 1962.

Dear Beth and Family: Dick mentored me at Westwood. He encouraged me to be a better teacher, to be a better golfer, and to have fun at WHS. We laughed every day, and I credit Dick with keeping us close as a math department. The students adored him, as did we. May fond memories sustain you and your family at this time. Sincerely, Karen Tosca Shea

I learned Calculus from Mr. Hargreaves in 1988-1989 at WHS. I returned to WHS for a visit long after I finished college and he asked me if I use it at all. My honest answer was, "Yes, of course I do! Every day!" He was happy to hear that, and (suprisingly to me) surprised! Many condolences to his family. He was both a fantastic math teacher and a fantastic track coach.

I only recently learned of Mr. Hargreaves passing. Like many I had the privilege of knowing Mr. Hargreaves from both a teacher and coach perspective at Westwood High. He was one of the most influential individuals of my high school years, and it saddens me to not have been able to share that with him. I went on from Westwood to major in engineering in college, and his teaching passion reignited my interest in math. He was my cross country coach for 3 seasons and my spring track coach for 3 seasons. Though he led us to many championships his long-term gift was the great memories of sportsmanship and team chemistry he fostered. Mr. Hargreaves I owe you a great debt and I hope to see you again one day so I can thank you.

I had Mr Hargreaves as a Math teacher in the early '70s. He was a great teacher. I loved learning from him. I went on to engineering school and a career in computers and I can't help but think that a lot of what I learned from him enriched my life and career. Thank you. Mr Hargreaves. Rest in Peace.
