We have lost a true friend and disciple of Jesus. David lived what St. Augustine once said: “Love God first and then love everything and everyone for the sake of God.” His work on this side of eternity is finished…….rest in peace dear friend…..until we meet again.

I had the privilege to work alongside Dr. Donohoe and Pat, his accomplished nurse-wife for 13 years until his retirement in 2004. Although I was a trained surgical assistant prior to joining them, I learned so much more in my experiences there—they were my real work family. I enjoyed accompanying him to volunteer at Woburn elementary schools to examine the teeth of young students, no doubt a tribute to his mother, Mary, who was a former Woburn school principal. We would get out of the office to perform oral surgery at Winchester hospital's operating room monthly where I was witness to other professionals who loved him and respected his skills. He was a positive influence on me as a selfless person. He wasn’t above scrubbing his own instruments after surgery or helping us out in other ways, probably unlike his days in Vietnam and residential training at Harlem hospital. I laughed in hearing about his growing up in Woburn and he and Pat sharing about living above the store while his kids were young. He loved his family and spoke often of their accomplishments. Dr. Donohoe gave his patients the best care and so much of himself. He’d treat some for no cost, especially the clergy. I remember the Little sisters of the poor coming to visit often for a generous donation. He was always willing to extend that generosity to me as well. I recall he’d say, “I want to get into heaven, Donna”. Well, I’m sure you’re there now and receiving a “good and faithful servant” from your Lord…Matthew 25:23
