So sorry to hear about Charles, I ever so enjoyed his company at the Polar reunions in Port Clyde Maine. He was easy to talk to. He never bragged, and yet his work is the true physical foundation for many of the most important scientific discoveries needed for our planet's future. My family all knew and admired him as well. I cannot give him the praise he deserves, so I will call him a friend. Fair winds and gentle seas. Goodbye dear sailor, goodbye. Andy Cameron

- When I first met him at a Old Antarctic Explorers meeting, you knew right away that Charlie was “ the real deal”.... the admiration and respect that his fellow shipmates and members had for Charlie was clear to see.... Charlie had quite a few “ stories” of his vast and wide ranging experiences as a United StatesNavy Sea Bee - especially his real life experiences of helping to establish McMurdo and South Pole stations when Antarctica was just starting to be explored..... Charlie, you did your job and you did it very very well - hopefully you are with your shipmates sharing stories of your exploits....we will miss you!

Charlie B was one of "my SeaBees" ever since I met him years ago. I would see him every year, either at an Antarctic Deep Freeze Association reunion, an Old Antarctic Explorers Association reunion, or when he would visit me in Denver while visiting his brother. Charlie frequently called me either at home or at the office. He organized book drives to donate to the Ruth Siple library at the South Pole. He strove to ensure that the Our Lady of the Snows shrine at McMurdo Station - in honor of his good friend Richard Williams - was still standing. He honored every passing Deep Freeze member with the Roll Call service at the reunions. I would say he was a passionate patriot. He had stories to tell and memories to share. He was a swimmer who competed in swim tournaments until he was in his early 80s. A remarkable man who went too soon. He was unforgettable, and I am so fortunate to have known him.

College Park, MD,
I was a newly minted ensign when I joined Naval Mobile Construction Battalion ONE in September 1971. Charlie took me under his wing and shied me the special ropes of Seabees. Thank you Charlie. Rest easy, my friend.

To the family of Charlie, I just recently learned of his passing but wanted to extend my sincere condolences. Charlie was a very dear friend of my family having served in the Seabees with both my dad and brother. He was a very interesting man to speak with and is missed dearly. Yes, Seabees Can Do.
