Sharin please know Dr. Russell is missed and may he rest in peace. We had some good laughs together. I will never for get his sense of humor relating to the environment of his office when he was on the 5th floor and sent me the following quote from the movie Sahara... "I am taking a few last gasps of air, and I have only a half a canteen of water remaining. I am parched and withered I barely have the strength to depress these keyboard buttons to write this. Water and fresh air is at a premium and you are my only hope…." My response to him was... "Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be tempered by men with the proper tools to increase and lower the temperature. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Russell, I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for a cooler space, and you curse the mechanics. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That employing a BU Mechanic, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, controls room temperatures. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at meetings, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like hot, cold, uncomfortable. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending room environment . You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very climate that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a calibration tool and make the adjustment Either way, the job needs to be done……." Quote from “A few Good Men” lol He got such a kick out of this that he read to all of his practice leaders- He was a remarkable guy... My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time God Bless.

So sorry to hear of Dr. Russell's passing. Had the privilege of working with him at Tufts. He had a way about him of making everyone feel important and as much a part of the team as the Dean of the school. He was loved by students, patients and his friends and partners in the Facilities Department. My sympathy to his family.

I am deeply saddened to hear of David Russell's passing, he has been a shining light in dentistry and the positions he has taken on over the last 30 years. When I first met David, I was stunned to meet this philosopher, artist, creative who happened to go into dentistry. The words he chose to describe things and always, his thoughtful answers to a question set him apart. These qualities are so unique and special in dentistry and as I sat at a wonderful Dean's advisory board meeting in NYC, David described his role as Dean of Admissions. " This class of students that we will admit is like a diverse and beautiful garden, with these incredible flowers that will bloom in 4 years". I can't really do it justice, as he described this class and using the garden as his metaphor, tears came to my eyes as I realized how wonderful this human being named David Russell was and how lucky Boston University Goldman school was to have him. I remember his smile, his thoughtfulness, yes, this renaissance man who gave so much of himself to others. I didn't know him for that long, but he greatly impacted my life and for that I am deeply grateful. My deepest sympathies to Sharin and your family.

His love for his wife, Sharin, and his unending devotion and kindness to his friends, colleagues, and students constantly demonstrated, and illuminated the abundance of love in his heart and the purity of his soul. I am so sorry for your loss. I am a current D3 at BU and Dr. Russell is the reason I had the courage to move across the country to go to dental school. I met him at a pre-health conference in my home state of California, and his warmth and genuine kindness was infectious. When I was deciding where to go to school, he told me that "A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for." That really resonated with me and inspired me to come to Boston. He was a great mentor to me and always greeted me with a smile and a hug. If everyone showed empathy and love the way he did, the world would be a much better and kinder place. When I talk to my classmates, it is clear that he made the same impression on all of them too. I hope that our class will honor him by extending more care and warmth to each other because I know that is what he would have wanted. Rest in peace, Dr. Russell, I know you are watching over all of us.

Dear Lanie and Barbara...I read with great sadness about David's death. So young and so renowned, he will be sorely missed. He used to faithfully call me at school on my birthday every year at lunch time, making all my colleagues jealous that I had such a warm, caring former student! He even found me at Winchester High when I moved there in 1988! Once I retired we lost touch but I'll always remember it. He and you helped me through my nervous, early teaching years!!! Love you. Fran

Medford, Massachusetts,
Lanie and Barbara..It's me again! I woke up thinking about your dear brother this morning and realized I had mischaracterized his charming calls to me over many years. Even better than acknowledging my birthday he actually called on the Ides of March every year and we reminisced about our annual class re-enactment of Caesar's assassination. For four years he volunteered to be assassinated!! Lanie, I think you even played Calpurnia one year!!! Great kids!! Magistra

Dear Sharin and the Russell Family I am deeply sadden by the passing of David. As a fellow faculty member at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, I was well aware of David's mentoring of students and care for the well being of patients . When I became Dean, David was one of my first appointments to Assistant Dean, and later to Associate Dean of Clinics. His innovative thinking and positive communication skills in leadership were essential in the many successful advancements made at the School..especially changing to group practice settings in the pre doctoral clinics. Thinking of him brings back so many fond memories that will always remain. Sincere condolences. Lonnie H. Norris, Dean Emeritus Tufts University School of Dental Medicine

Dear Sharin : Since we first met, at our wedding in December, 1991, I have referred to you two as “our little darlings”, handsome, attractive, brilliant, joyous, sensitive, and you have gifted us with some of the happiest, memorable times of our lives. He was a star, a brilliant comet that flashed across the sky, that was gone too soon. A favorite memory is David and I at the upstairs bar at Grille 23, on our second martini, conversing about the meaning of life, and I said, “ A sage once said that : “ the unexamined life is not worth living.” To which David immediatly replied: “ The unlived life is not worth examining “ ! And live he did. We all greive with you. Love you, David, and our times together. Jim and Connie

I am deeply saddened and bereft to learn that Dr. Russell will no longer stroll among his loyal patients to bestow his beaming smiles, apropos bon mots, impeccable dental care and confident advice. David has become far more than merely my brilliant dentist this quarter century, but a fellow arts fan, joyous conversationalist, and shining beacon of wit and wisdom. “We shall not see his like again.”

Denver, CO,
We are deeply sorry for your loss. You and your family are in our prayers during this difficult time. I remember him in my last year in dental school, 2017, when he called me to his office, I have never had the chance to meet him before, and to be honest, I was scared. Then he asked me to close the doir, he called me to recognize and thank me for helping a fellow student finding a case for her exam. After that, I did not save a chance to talk to him, consult him about whatever big choices I am facing, and he never hold his advice and he always found the time in his busy schedule for me. He is always going to be remembered and thought fondly of.

Our deepest condolences to Mrs. Sharin Russell and the Russell family (from the whole advanced standing class of 2022 at Boston University), we are very saddened by the passing of Dr David Russell. Despite our short time knowing him, many of us had the privilege to interact with him, and we all conclude that he showed a remarkable atmosphere at the University and more than a Dr/Professor relationship, he made us feel at home! He would always mention a little trivia or information from each of the students home town or country, and many of us are still surprised from his knowledge. We can definitely say, he put a smile on all our faces! He showed a tremendous sense of paternalism, charisma and joy, demonstrating his skills as a well prepared educator. We will keep him and your family in our prayers and he will live forever in our memories. Sincerely The Advanced Standing Class of 2022 At Boston University.

His remarkable talents, charm, wit, and genuine kindness have made an indelible mark on my life and have never and will never be forgotten. Dear Sharin, I am so very sad to learn of David's passing. He was one of the kindest, most gentle people I have ever met. I would usually see him once a year or so, (for his eye exam) and I always felt so incredibly uplifted after seeing him. He had a beautiful way of listening to a person, and with such sincerity. I have read through many of the condolences posted here, and every one of them shows another side of this wonderful, generous, humorous soul we all had the pleasure of knowing. I will remember him always. I grieve with you for this devastating loss. Dr. Patricia Fox

Dr. Russell provided me with an opportunity that set the course of my life– BU was the only dental school I was accepted into, and that might not have happened had I not connected with him. I’m eternally grateful for his belief in me to succeed. Though our connection was based upon few interactions, I admired his warm heart and gentle demeanor. My dearest condolences to the Russell family.
