I am so sorry to hear of Rick’s passing. We go back a long way when I was on the Boston City Council. He was a wonderful man and cared about his community. My deepest sympathy is with Loretta and your entire family.

My deepest condolences to the Wakem family. I had known Rick, Loretta, Tina and Richard for almost 40 years, as a exchange student and became friends. I saw Rick last September while visiting Boston with my kids, and we have a blast! Good memories! Rick was a very special person to me, and I used to call him my American Dad. I will miss him dearly. Dear Loretta, Tina, Richard, Fran and families, Please accept our deepest sympathy on your loss. I always admired Rick's love of life, but more importantly, of family. He made everything seem like nothing was a problem. Anything could be fixed. If someone needed a ride and he was going the opposite direction, he would re-route and help that person by going out of his way. And we can never thank him enough for stepping in when we were young with a 3-family house and needed SO much help. He walked right in, got to work, and made things right. These are the things we will never forget. I also remember getting my first (and only) motorcycle ride when he came to my parents house in Roslindale and took me "for a spin" around Albano and Kittredge. I was nervous, but I also felt safe because I always knew Rick would never let anything happen to me. He left quite a legacy behind. And that "laugh," that I call the "Wakem laugh"....yes you ALL have it! I don't think I will ever forget that! Rest in peace, Rick. You were a great man.

Rick came into my thoughts today...I was a tenant of yours on Farquar St in the early 70's. Your family was always so much fun to be around and Rick definitely helped to start me in the teaching profession At a time when I had the opportunity to go into teaching or stay in my RN position at the Baptist. Rick told me to go for it and it shaped everything I have done in my life. Over the years I have been sorry to have lost touch with him and Loretta, but they have always been thought of fondly and with gratitude.
