I met Charlie in 1975. We were Troopers together at SP Holden. We later connected on different occasions when I was stationed at State Police Hdqtrs, South Boston and Charlie was a BPD Motorcycle Officer. One thing I loved about Charlie was his sense of humor and his kind, easy going manner. I didn’t know he was a Viet Nam Combat Vet until I read his obituary. But that was so like Charlie. Sad to see his passing. I too am at Dana Farber. Would have loved to have run into him one more time..... Respectfully, Jack Dunn Lieutenant Colonel/ret Mass State Police

So sorry for your lose and I am praying for God's continued grace and comfort be with you. I never met Mr. O'Neil, but from what Michael has told me and what I have read about him here he is true American hero who served his country and family well. God Bless.

I worked and rode with Charlie ( in Central Mass) on the state police back when he first started his career in law enforcement. Charlie was so likeable and a larger than life individual. His wit, humor and wisdom was such a prominent part of his personality. We hated to lose him to Boston PD. But, we all knew and accepted that Boston was his first love and he belonged there. I would run into him from time to time and he was always the same Charlie.......except for his distinguished mustache. So sorry for his loss and he will always be fondly remembered by all those that knew him.

RIP classmate! My condolences to his family. I met Charlie at the State Police Academy in 1972. His humor always brought a laugh, sometimes resulting in pushups or running laps. Classmates, do you remember the Chelsea Wombat? God Speed Charlie!

RIP classmate! My sincerest condolences to Charlie's family! We entered the MSP academy together in 1972. Charlie's humor lightened the grind of that 16 week period. It often resulted in laughter at an inopportune time resulting in extra pushups and more running. God Speed Charlie! Stew Sterling MSP retired 56th RTT

I worked with Charlie on the Mass Pike circa 1976-77. He was a very funny and courageous guy. Always kept you laughing and showed great courage when needed. Permit me one story. A tractor trailer truck was laid up on it's side against the guardrail on the jug-handle ramp to I/C 14 (Pike east to Rte 128}. The cab split open on impact and the driver had fallen out and was pinned between the trailer box and the guardrail, facing the guardrail with the trailer against the back of his legs and knees. The driver was conscious but in great distress. It would be several hours before we were able to get enough equipment there to remove the trailer box and transport him to the hospital. Charlie crawled down into the wreckage and made contact with the driver. He stayed there the entire time talking to the guy to give him comfort and keep him from blacking out. The driver survived, thanks to Charlie's courage. An amazing man. RIP Charlie, Walter White MSP 1974-79.

Charlie was a stand up guy who had no use for fools or phonies. Loved working with Charlie because I knew it would be a shift full of laughs and “adventures “. A great friend and a true hero! RIP

My condolences to Charlie's family. I was his MSP classmate in 1972. Charlie was the best. A funny, witty and great guy. He worked with me at the Tunnels, Mass Turnpike, before going on the BPD. I will certainly miss him. RIP, Brother.

My deepest sympathy to the O'Neil Family. Charlie was a sincere and humble man. He truly cared about people which is why he was a good Police Officer. When things where not pleasant he had a special way of injecting humor into the problem. It always made life a little easier. He will truly be missed. Bill O'Connell (Ret. BPD Sgt.)

Charlies. Family. It was with great sadness that I read about Charlie. During his time with the state police he was admired and liked by all. When he left and went back to Boston PD it was a great loss to our dept. Charlie had a great down to earth way about him. Made you like him immediately and you wanted to be a close friend. I didn't know about his service in Vietnam and his acts of valor. It makes me again saddened by his leaving. Living in Mashpee I would have been able to be in contact at sometime here on the" Cape." My family prayers to all of you. Kevin W Peabody MSP (ret) Semper fi.
