I met David in 1984, when I was working at a health club in Natick. To attract customers, the health clubs had “Lead Boxes” at the time, which were boxes that had entry blanks attached to them with a pen. The lucky winner, if picked, would win a year’s membership. The fact is, everybody won a free workout session—it was a way to bring customers in the door to sell them a membership. David filled out the entry blank and I called him. When David arrived for his session, I had no idea how strong he was—he had on a jersey with baggy sweat pants. The goal was to give the person a QUICK workout on the machines and then coerce them into signing a year’s contract, that day! That wasn’t the case with DAVID—he was there to get in a free quality workout. The weights that I loaded on each machine were light, designed not to hurt anyone but have the individual feel their muscles work. He told me that the weight was too light. When all was said and done, he had me load each machine with the highest weight possible. He eventually took his shirt off and sported an ADONIS-like physique. Put simply, he was massive. The only thing that was bigger than his muscles, I eventually found out, was his intellect. I was fascinated with him. Unfortunately, my bosses weren’t fascinated with me as I spent over an hour with him and he didn’t join the club, but we kept in touch ever since then and became the best of friends. As our friendship grew, I started to realize just how smart he was, on just about every subject—physics, chemistry, history, mathematics, English, and everything in between. When I had to take physics and chemistry before undertaking studies for physical therapy, he came to school with me and tutored me. I would’ve never passed those courses if it hadn’t been for David. Later, when I went to PT school, he came to classes with me there as well. During one such class, Anatomy and Physiology, he noticed that there was an error in the book. He raised his hand and told the professor. The professor said they could discuss it after class, at which time David pointed out the error and sure enough, he was right!! The professor was stunned. My life changed, for the better, when I met David Bean. He taught me the importance of educating myself on ALL aspects of life. He was kind, gentle (but aggressive, when he needed to be), and intellectual, had integrity, was hardworking, proved to be a financial wiz, and most importantly, had a beautiful heart. I truly loved David like a brother. If I may borrow the lyrics from the song “Vincent” by Don McLean: “This world was never meant for one as beautiful as you.” David, may your soul, heart, and spirit somehow transmit into our being and give us the love and respect you had for the universe, for its people, and for all living things. I truly love you, David. May you rest in peace.

I am so sorry that I didn't learn until yesterday that David had passed! I had texted him several times recently and didn't hear back and was nervous that something had happened. David used to help me out with shoveling and raking and yardwork. I also saved all of my returnable cans for David and he would come and get them when he was "in the neighborhood" helping out with his mom. David was very intelligent and I think had a really gentle soul and a very big heart; as well as being a very hard worker! My thoughts go out to his friends and family, may he rest in peace!!
