I am pleased that I was notified of Mr. Matareses' passing as he was a significant individual in my life and early development. I knew him as my junior high school teacher and coach. He was passionate about his job as a teacher and coach. He brought our team to the junior high school playoffs in Boston Garden. To play in the Garden on the same floor as Bob Cousy, Bill Russell and Bill Sharman was certainly special. More than that he was caring and inspiring. He set a good example for all of us. He pushed me in a positive way in both athletics and academics. His career from military to Superintendent is just remarkable. Living away from Stoneham after high school limited my interactions with him but I followed his career with admiration. I am certainly a better person for his mentoring. Remembering his comments in an intense huddle during our basketball games always brings a smile to my face. A life well lived on many fronts. May he rest in peace.

Frank Matarese was one of the most dedicated, respected educators the Stoneham school system has ever had. As a science teacher, he made sure you learned the material while making his classes fun at the same time. He never forgot the underdog, less fortunate, handicapped kid- made sure they got their diploma & were prepared for their years beyond high school. Best teacher/coach I ever had. He was my role model, mentor throughout my career. Can't thank him enough for all he did for me & so many others through out our careers. We will neveer forget him. Rest in peace.

Bob had been our neighbor for 35 years. As is typical of the Greatest Generation, he never spoke of his many accomplishments. He was humble and kind and more than anything else, had a wonderful sense of humor. A shining example of a life well lived. May his family take comfort in the fact that he is now with his beloved Louise. Rest in peace Bob. You will be missed.

Just reading this today, I feel a large piece of my spiritual being has been yanked from my heart as this was a man whom I truly loved, respected, and listened to in many walks of my life; be it classroom, athletics or just conversation. He was sent by God to be a member of the 'Greatest Generation' and certainly fulfilled all requirements and duties of those who preserved our World to come from the ugliness of Communism and Socialism. I remember recently sitting beside he and his lovely wife Louise in a local Doctor's office when he instantly put his arm around me once again and asked 'Frannie' ( that is what he called me); how are things ? ". I loved being near this fabulous and gentle man whose life is a model of what being a "Man"; Gentleman, Scholar, Teacher, Coach, Family Man, and most of all 'Friend' could ever be. I mourn for myself , my co teammates at Stoneham Schools and students who shared his Science Courses and others who loved him just as much as I did and I'm sure , as I, shall never be the same knowing he is gone from our life presence. Thank You ' Mr.' Matarese; as you 'made a difference'; comforted us' and made us 'want to' learn and be the best we ever could be. We Loved You dearly. Rest In Peace now with your lovely Louise. ' Frannie'....

Frank was my mentor as principal at Stoneham Junior High in 1963. He was always willing to give you tips in teaching science and general classroom operation. There are many hundreds of students who benefitted from him being the principal at SJH.
